How to Configure SMTP Settings for Email Alerts with Triton ULTRA
This guide walks through how to set up email alerts directly from your Triton ULTRA sensor using SMTP. This is an on-prem feature — no Triton Cloud account is required. You'll need SMTP credentials from your email provider and an app password (not your regular email password). For a visual step-by-step walkthrough with screenshots, follow the Scribe guide linked below.

A note on SMTP vs. Triton Cloud: While SMTP email alerts are fully supported, we don't recommend them as the primary alerting method. SMTP can be delayed by network or email server issues, and SMTP-to-text is now largely obsolete since most major phone carriers no longer support it. For faster, more reliable alerts — including push notifications and text messages — we recommend using Triton Cloud instead.
How do I access SMTP settings?
- Log in to the sensor's local web interface by entering its IP address in your browser.
- Click Platform Integration in the navigation menu.
- Click SMTP Settings.
How do I configure SMTP?
- Toggle Enable to ON to activate email alerts.
- Enter your SMTP settings based on your email provider:
Gmail:
- Host: smtp.gmail.com
- Port: 587
- Security: TLS
- User: your full Gmail address
- Password: a Gmail App Password (not your regular password) — How to set up a Gmail App Password
Outlook / Office 365:
- Host: smtp-mail.outlook.com
- Port: 587
- Security: TLS
- User: your full Outlook/Office 365 email
- Password: an Outlook App Password — How to set up an Outlook App Password
- Set the Sender to the same email as your User field.
- Add up to 10 recipient email addresses to receive alerts. If you need to notify more than 10 people, use a distribution list or email group and enter that group address as a single recipient.
- Click Save.

Contact Triton Support and we can help you get the right configuration for your email provider.
How do I choose which events send email alerts?
After saving your SMTP settings, you need to enable email as an action for each event type:
- Go to Actions → Action Settings.
- Click "set" under the email column for each event you want email alerts for (e.g., Vape, THC, Aggression, Tamper).
- Click Save All.
How do I test the email configuration?
- Go back to Platform Integration → SMTP Settings and click Test. A test email will be sent to all configured recipients.
If the test fails, it's almost always due to a misconfiguration — even a small typo in the email address, password, host, or port can prevent it from working. Double-check that you're using an app password, not your regular email password.
Can I customize the email template?
Yes. Go to Resources → Email Template on the sensor's local interface to edit the default format and content of alert emails. See our guide: How To Adjust the Default Email Template for Triton ULTRA
Can I send alerts to Slack, Microsoft Teams, or Google Chat instead?
Yes — you can point the SMTP recipient at a channel email address in any of those platforms. See our integration guides for detailed instructions:

- Microsoft Teams - Triton ULTRA Integration
- Google Chat - Triton ULTRA Integration
